2021 - End Direct Provision (Single)

A song about the hellish institution 'Direct Provision', which is used as a means of "housing" asylum seekers in Ireland.

Set up in 1999 as a temporary solution, it is now entering its 21st year in existence, despite the fact that it has been condemned by many including the UN as a serious violation of human rights.

Asylum Seekers are forced to live in appalling conditions, often with as many as eight people sharing a single room. Many of these rooms are badly run down, damp and in some cases even infested with cockroaches.

On top of this, they are served absolutely horrific food by companies whose sole aim is profit, not the welfare of the inhabitants.

They can't cook, they can't work, they can't really go anywhere and they are often kept in this brutal system for 10 years or more.

Many of these people have fled war, poverty, abuse and terror and this is how the Irish state treats them. It is a shame on our country and has to stop.

The government have pledged to end Direct Provision in the lifetime of the current coalition but it is up to us to put pressure on them to do this in a meaningful and proper fashion that puts the welfare of Asylum Seekers first. We must not allow them to simply repackage the current system as they are likely to try and get away with doing.

Direct Provision has gone on long enough and it is time we started treating Asylum Seekers as the human beings they are.
